According to Chinese folklore, the ninth day of the ninth month is Double Ninth Day or Double Yang – a day of good fortune, to be celebrated by drinking wine on a mountain top. On Thursday, September 9, the Asian Pacific Development Center (APDC) brings the celebration down from the mountain with Artist of Asia Showcase Opening Night Gala.

From 6 to 9:30 pm, art lovers gathered in the Norwest Bank Atrium (1740 Broadway) for the first chance to view – and buy – over eighty pieces of work by twenty artists from six countries. Gala guests were treated to a Vietnamese buffet catered by T-Wa Terrace, as well as performances by Catur Eka Santi performing music from Bali and the Kaze to Gen Ensemble featuring Japanese koto music. Tickets to the fundraising gala were $50.

The artwork will be display to the general public, free of charge, from September 10 through September 24.

Artists of Asia provides Coloradans the opportunity to view art works from Asian artists who are critically acclaimed in their own countries. Styles range from traditional to contemporary, with works that incorporate printmaking, abstract painting, figurative painting, acrylic-on-silk painting and photography.

“In 1998, over 2000 people came to our very first Showcase,” recalls APDC Executive Director, Dr. Sumiko Hennessy. “We hope that this year will be able to introduce even more people to the incredible creativity of these Asian artists.”

Featured artists include Hyun Kwang Shin (Korean), Tsogtsaikhan Mijid (Mongolian), Bao Tang Ho (Vietnamese), Quang Ho (Vietnamese), Spark Chan (Chinese), Song Tao (Chinese) and Lisa G. Burkhart (pictured right, native Coloradan of Chinese and German descent).

Proceeds from ticket and art sales benefit the health, mental health and social service programs of the Asian Pacific Development Center. The event is sponsored by Norwest Bank, Hewlett Packard and Chi Investments.

The Asian Pacific Development Center is non-profit organization that provides human services to the Asian and Pacific Island communities in Colorado. APDC programs include teen mentoring, conflict resolution, family therapy, senior outreach, domestic violence education, bilingual assessment, and language translation. APCD also provides professional consultation services such as interpretation services, customized training programs and EAP services.
